I stood on my front porch yesterday as I waved goodbye to my mother. The wind was blowing, the temperature was dropping and I was barefoot without a coat. As she pulled away, I quickly hurried inside and was greeted with a serene peace as the door closed behind me. The house was clean, a candle was lit and the tone was warm and inviting. It surprised me. I clean each day and do my best to make my house a home but not often do I realize just how wonderful it feels to be greeted with that feeling of home.
There are certain things that we remember from our childhood that always made home well…home. For me, it was during fall and winter that my home felt magical and now I realize that it was because my mother made it feel that way. With her little touches here and there she made our house a home. (And that’s saying something, considering we’ve moved about 20 times…no joke!) There was always an inviting feeling that made me want to snuggle up and read a book. Now a wife myself, I’ve started following in her footsteps in making my house a home.
It is so important for us homemakers to make home an inviting and warm place. We never know what type of baggage our family is bringing home from their days out in this cruel world. For them, home is a retreat, a place of calm and serenity. Don’t forget that. You are the peace keeper of the home and you help keep everything calm.
Here are some tips to keep the peace and serenity in your home on a daily basis:
1. Organize and put away
Walking into a cluttered home leaves the mind cluttered. When you can’t find what you’re looking for, or have no space to put down your things, you can feel frustrated. Make sure to have a clean and organized home.
2. Have a nice scent filling your home
Isn’t it nice when you walk in and smell a wonderful scent? It fills you with memories and happy thoughts doesn’t it? For me, I try to fill my home with seasonal smells; as it’s currently fall my home is filled with the smell of apples and cinnamon (I’ll be honest, I’m not big on pumpkin). Come winter, it’s evergreen, peppermint and sugar cookies! So, whether you’re lighting a candle or baking, fill your home with inviting smells.
3. Have a warm glow throughout the home
By having a warm glow, I mean it literally! 🙂 Having harsh, bright light in your home can take away from the ambiance. Having your lamps using soft light bulbs that let off a pleasant glow helps to keep your home feeling cozy and warm.
How do you create a warm and welcoming feeling in your home?
