“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established” Proverbs 24:3.
Around my house, it is no secret that I hate to clean. Don’t get me wrong I love a clean house, I just don’t want to be the one doing the cleaning. I feel there could be better things to do with my time. I really do not know how women, in prairie time, used to do nothing but cleaning and cooking. I know there are ladies out there that love it and I wish we lived in a society that those who loved a certain task did it for those around them while the other ladies did other tasks, so that it balanced out. For instance, I hate to clean and only do it because it needs to be done but if someone who loved to clean cleaned for me then I could go grocery shopping for them or be their counselor, if needed, since I will have my license soon. They wouldn’t have to pay a counselor and I wouldn’t have to pay a maid…win, win!
My rant happened all just to say the time has come again to do the worst kind of cleaning. SPRING CLEANING!
Seriously, not my thing but right now I have no choice. I live in a house with a husband, five kids, and foster kids, not to mention the cat and two dogs so life, as you may assume, gets messy. I have this rule of thumb in my house that if you haven’t used it in over a year get rid of it. During spring cleaning we usually find about three bags of trash because my kids like to stash wrappers, broken toys, or things that are missing too many pieces to be played with anymore. Heaven forbid if they actually walk the twenty feet to the trashcan, sometime throughout the year, to dump it themselves. (Am I speaking to anyone or is this just my house?) We locate items that we haven’t used in over a year but were pretty costly when we first purchased them so those usually go in a yard sale, shortly after spring cleaning ends since we live in desert territory and have no desire to be out in the 100+ degree weather. Anything extra that is unwanted typically gets taken to a thrift store or shelter, depending on what it is. We basically clean things out to make room for more stuff that we don’t need. It makes me long for the Little House on the Prairie days when all people had was necessities, even though I hate cleaning.
This season is a bit different than normal because a few weeks ago I had surgery on my knee and am in the middle of recovery right now, when I should be spring cleaning. I thought it was a great excuse for a break from the boring (cough, cough…cleaning!) but little did I know that God had a different plan in mind. I am such an on-the-go type person that being so stationary has really got to me. Just to go places I need a driver, which some might think is cool but let me reassure you, it is not because they are not random people being paid to be at my beck and call, they are friends who are willing to help out when they have the time. Most of my friends a lot of kids like I do or work so you can imagine how much free time they actually have which translates into “Sarah is stuck at home most of the time.”
Since I am unable to get down on my knees to do deep cleaning or for that matter just moving around the house to pick things up my time is used in what maybe described as the best spring cleaning I have ever experienced. The Lord spoke to me about cleaning out unnecessary time, spent on watching TV or the computer, to use just for Him. I have had a lot of journaling time, reading and studying scripture, working on sermons for my youth, researching youth ministry ideas, praying long-deep-BIG prayers, and enjoying what God shows me through that time. It has been extremely productive, it may not look like it when walking around my house, but this spring I have done a lot of deep cleaning. I am able to redirect my reactions quicker, when my kids are a little less than wonderful. I am able to shower my husband with affection, when at times before it sometimes felt like a chore. I can let go of piddly little things that used to bug me because I have a little Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, that liked to come out when things weren’t just right. I have experienced some miracles, from my prayer time, that I would not have seen if I wasn’t following His instruction.
Although this won’t last forever because I am doing physical therapy for my knee which means it is only a matter of time before I have to go back to traditional cleaning, I am feeling extremely blessed by Spring Cleaning! Who knew? The LORD.
