Abigail is definitely a favorite of mine when it comes to women in the Bible. She was wise, strong and stood up for what was right. I think there is a lot that we can learn from her story.
I’m sure we all know a woman like Abigail. She is beautiful, smart, not struggling for money, married, it seems like her life is great. What we don’t realize is that her husband isn’t that great. He is angry, selfish and possibly even abusive. But from the outside it seems like her life is fantastic.
This is the woman we meet in 1 Samuel 25 and as we look at her story I believe that there are a few different things that God would like us all to learn.
We first meet Abigail in 1 Samuel 25. This story takes place right after Samuel had died. David was on the run from Saul and was running low of food and resources for his men and their stock. So when David came across the land of Nabal he sent a request to Nabal for food and shelter in return for protecting the flocks. When Nabal refused David became very angry and prepared to attack and kill Nabal.
One of the servants let’s Abigail know what is going on and when she realized her husband’s life is in danger she quickly gathers food and supplies and rides out to meet David to stop him from attacking. David is calmed by Abigail’s request to forgive Nabal and her presentation of food. David then stops from attacking.
At this time Nabal is enjoying a big feast and is quite drunk by the time Abigail returns. When Nabal finds out what Abigail has done he suffers a stroke and after 10 days, dies. When David hears of this he sends for Abigail to marry him which she agrees to do.
Now that we know the story I want to share a few key truths that I believe God teaches us from this story.
God uses the unexpected to change our course.
We can clearly see that David was set in his course. He was going to destroy Nabal and everything that he had. I can imagine that nothing would have gotten in David’s way. Nothing, that is, except Abigail. God used Abigail to stop David from killing a man in anger. Something simple, but something unexpected was used to stop David.
When I think back on my life I can clearly see that there are times that God has used small and unexpected things to change a decision or redirect me. At the time it can be hard to have our minds changed but I know that God’s ways are better and He is stopping me from going against what is best.
So the next time you have something unexpected pop up in your life that causes a change to plans or decisions, think about Abigail and how God used her to change David’s path and how maybe, this unexpected thing is God wanting to change your path too.
Wisdom can save your life.
As we know, David was out to kill Nabal and anything and anyone in his way. Then comes Abigail who made the wise decision to go against her husband and give David what he wanted. This ended up saving her life and the lives of those around her.
In your life you probably won’t have to make decisions that are directly going to impact you in a life or death matter like Abigail but there are many times that you will need to make a decision and after that decision is made you will see the impact it has had on your life and the lives of those around you.
We don’t know if Abigail sort God for wisdom but I do know that God is the only place we will get true wisdom from.
Stand up for what is right.
We know that at this time in David’s story he wasn’t officially king. Yes, God had told him that he would be king but King Saul was still living and ruling. Despite this, I am sure that Nabal and Abigail knew who David was and that God had appointed him as the true king. Therefore, Nabal was disobeying the request of God’s chosen king.
Abigail, on the other hand, stood up for what she knew was right, even though it went against her husband. At the end of the story we see that this was the right decision for Abigail and she was duly rewarded. Nabal unfortunately was struck down and died after displaying his arrogant and selfish nature.
Every time that I read this story in the Bible I reminded that wisdom is extremely important in our lives. I encourage you to pray for wisdom and like King Solomon I am sure that God will grant us this prayer and we will be able to use our wisdom for good.
